The Body Forfeit (Querying)

A story for those questioning who they really are.

It started with a question that wouldn’t let me sleep.

What is it like not to feel comfort in your own body?

And what would it mean if you could finally find comfort—just not in the body you were born with?

The Body Forfeit was born from that question—and from the quiet ache of watching people struggle to live inside forms that no longer feel like home. We tell ourselves identity is fixed, that the body is only a vessel and the soul its steady passenger. But what happens when that certainty fractures—when even the vessel becomes negotiable?

It also grew from something darker: the rise of commodification and the quiet spread of authoritarianism—how easily we surrender our autonomy when control is repackaged as safety.

This manuscript isn’t only science fiction; it’s an act of empathy. It’s written for anyone who has ever looked in the mirror and wondered who was looking back.

In the aftermath of the Jung Particle’s discovery, humanity learned to do what once belonged to gods—exchange bodies. What began as salvation for the sick and dying became the ultimate form of control. Governments regulate it. Corporations refine it. And the powerless are forfeited—their bodies claimed, their minds displaced in the name of order.

Detective Sam McCarthy has built his career on staying grounded in his own skin, refusing the transfers that turned identity into a commodity. But when a killer begins leaping between hosts to erase every trace of their crimes, Sam is forced across the line he’s sworn to uphold. His first transfer shatters every certainty he’s held—because the moment he wakes in another body, he realizes he’s not just hunting the killer; he’s becoming part of the system he despises.

Beside him stands Katie Lee, a resistance operative fighting to expose the truth behind the government’s forfeit program. Together, they uncover a conspiracy that threatens to erase the very concept of self.

As the line between justice and survival blurs, Sam must face the question that began it all:
If you could trade your body to find peace, would you still be you?

The Body Forfeit is a speculative thriller about identity, empathy, and the cost of salvation in a world where even the soul can be repossessed.
